La Planta: Bringing Vegan Mexican Cuisine to the Community

Aspiring filmmaker and University of New Mexico film student Jovana Flores recently released a short documentary film about La Planta, a non profit organization that works with Mexican-American communities to introduce more vegan options and show how to still enjoy traditional foods in plant-based versions.

Alicia Saenz, who owns Alicia’s Tortilleria, the biggest tortilleria in Santa Fe, talks about how La Planta introduced her to vegan Mexican cooking and how it pushed her to add a vegan menu at her own shop.

Victor Flores, La Planta’s Executive Director, explains how the organization started and why making vegan Mexican food free and accessible matters for the community.

Patricia Pinzón, the Head Consul of Mexico in Albuquerque, talks about how vegan eating isn’t common in many Mexican and Mexican-American homes and why the consulate supports La Planta’s work.

The documentary illustrates La Planta’s work introducing veganism to the Mexican-American community. Their goal is to improve community health, keep cultural traditions alive and make food available in neighborhoods that wouldn’t normally have these resources.
