Overnight shootings leave 4 dead

Tragedy struck Aug. 31 when a late-night shooting in an Albuquerque apartment complex took the lives of four people.

Witness reported that two men had been drinking alcohol and arguing much of the day inside an apartment. One of the men involved in the dispute had called his parents to pick him up.

As the man entered a vehicle just before midnight, the other man pulled out a gun and opened fire. Gunshots struck and killed the man and two others in the vehicle. The gunman then turned the weapon on himself. He died at the scene.

APD has confirmed the shooter had no prior criminal history but has not offered a potential motive.

As police continue to investigate this horrific case, APD said it is trying to aid locals who are still reeling from this act of violence.

“We work with ACS, who goes out to the community after homicide events to work with the neighbors and anyone else that wants input or wants to know better what happened, so we can try to heal these communities and heal these families as best we can after these incidents occur,” Cmdr. Kyle Hartsock of the Criminal Investigations Division said during a press conference.

The four deaths mark the end of a very grim August for Albuquerque.

The Duke City saw homicides increase from just three in July to a massive 17 reported in August alone, according to the 2024 Homicide Map created by ABQ RAW. The map uses data on reported homicides from APD.

The violent month accounted for over a quarter of all homicides in 2024 and has left many questions about what is being done to keep the community safe.

This comes as APD graduated 41 new cadets in July. The department has also increased patrol presence in areas like the Central Avenue corridor.
