Polls show voters’ election concerns

Rent poll results revealed more than 53% of New Mexicans say their biggest concerns this election cycle are the economy and crime. Both issues have been at the forefront of debate for U.S. Senate candidates incumbent Democrat Sen. Martin Heinrich and his Republican challenger Nella Domenici.

In a poll released in August from Emerson College and The Hill, nearly 1,000 New Mexicans were asked what issues matter the most to them and what their opinions were in regards to the 2024 election candidates.

Along with the economy and crime, health care and immigration made the list as topics of interest for voters.

Residents were able to participate in the poll for three days from Aug. 20 to Aug. 22, and results were released the following day. With the election approaching in November, these results show how New Mexicans are paying close attention to these issues when being discussed on the campaign trail.

A separate poll released by Emerson College showed Heinrich polling 12 points ahead of Domenici, leading 49% to 37%. Heinrich is running for reelection and has built his platform on the promise of a safer and more prosperous New Mexico.

Economic opportunity is highlighted as an important topic on his campaign website. In the past, his promise for economic growth has been a strong factor to gain points with voters.

Political analyst Gabe Sanchez told KRQE-TV that this follows national trends.

“Senator Heinrich has the name recognition; he’s got the credibility,” Sanchez said. “His record is nearly spotless in terms of legislative, so he’s not vulnerable in any stretch of the imagination.”
