What do the Zia symbol and color scheme represent?

QUESTION IN PROGRESS

Question: What do the Zia symbol and color scheme represent?

What we’ve learned:

We learned not only what the Zia symbol means, but the controversy that surrounds it. New Mexico appropriated the symbol in 1925, using it on the state flag without the Zia Pueblo’s permission. Since then, the pueblo has struggled to gain back control of the symbol.

What we still need to learn:

We need to include the Zia Pueblo or someone that is an expert on the pueblo. If you know someone willing to help us, please contact us.
